May Missions – Guatemala 

Description:

This program offers you an opportunity to live and travel in another culture, do missions and take university accredited courses in Missions and Spanish.  

 Dates:

You will fly to Guatemala on April 29, 2007 and return May 30, 2007.

            Prerequisite: Spanish 100 (101 TWU) or 2 years of high school Spanish. 

 

NOTE: It is also possible to take Spanish 100.

NOTE: You may choose to take one or two courses. 

Program:

            Besides classes in the above two courses, students will be involved in a program that integrates the material with practical experiences taken from living in the cross-cultural setting of Guatemala, Central America. This will include living with a Guatemalan family for 7 days, daily life experiences such as riding the chicken bus and shopping in the open market for fruit and vegetables, tours through the beautiful old Spanish colonial city of Antigua, coffee in the courtyard cafes, trips to Lake Atitlan, with its Mayan villages, the Pacific beach and a hike up an active volcano. It will also include volunteer work at a local ministry site, such as teaching ESL or helping at an orphanage, visiting local churches, and a 4 day mission trip to a remote part of the country.

Slava Petlitsa, B.Sc., B.A., M.A.                                                                                                                      
                                                                                                                            Born and raised in
Eastern Europe, Slava has been absorbed in multi-cultural and multi-lingual societies all his life.  He has earned degrees in Science, Philology (languages), and Biblical Studies, and is currently concluding a further degree in Linguistics.   Additionally, Slava hold the Nivel Superior of the Diploma de Espanol awarded by the Ministry of Education of Spain.  A modern languages instructor at Trinity Western University, Slava teaches both regular Spanish courses and labs as well as Spanish for Transcultural Nursing.

Together with his wife, Joanne, Slava has been involved in ministry in Eastern Europe and Central America.  In conjunction with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, Slava has participated in Latin American Studies Programs for University Professors in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and has also volunteered in a mission in Mexico.  For the past five years, Slava and Joanne have ministered in Christian education in a Spanish-speaking church in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where the congregation is comprised of new immigrants from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

 

Joanne Pepper, B.A., M.A., Ph.D.
                                                                                                            Having lived and worked in numerous missionary contexts, Dr. Joanne Pepper brings expertise in Biblical studies, missions and contextualized theology, world faiths, ESL teaching and training a variety of cross-cultural experience to the college.  After obtaining an undergraduate diploma in Bible and theology, a B.A. degree in Sociology, and a TESL certificate, Joanne went on to complete an M.A. in Cross-cultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.  Further work at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and fieldwork in Brazil, led to the completion of her Ph.D. from the University of Warwick in Great Britain

During and following the completion of her studies, Joanne spent terms of missionary ministry in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and the former Soviet Union.  She has served on the faculty of Summit Pacific College, and is currently Co-ordinator of Intercultural Religious Studies and an Assistant Professor of missions at Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia.   Joanne is married to Slava Petlitsa, who shares her heart for celebrating all cultures.

 TWU students need to apply at the GLC office on campus. TWU pricing will apply.

 

 This includes course costs, accommodation and food, textbooks, all trips and other parts

of the program. It does not include airfare (about $1000), passport, medical expenses,

personal items and expenses in Guatemala or Sunday lunches. 

       

 

Application: All applications are to be emailed to Program Director Mr. Bob Adams. 

                Students are to send:

-           Name and address/phone number and current educational status.

-           Courses they wish to enroll in.

-           A written personal testimony.

-           Their reasons and goals for taking the program.

-            

You will be notified of acceptance after a phone interview.

You will then make a $1000 initial non refundable payment. The balance will be due April 15th

You will then be sent course registration and student commitment and waiver forms which must be completed and returned.

You must purchase your own plane ticket.
